India, Oman consider importing gas from Iran

Tehran - India and Oman are considering to import gas from Iran, the caretaker of the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC), Hossein Bidarmaghz said on Sunday. Referring to the previous talks between Tehran and New Delhi, he noted that an Indian delegation will travel to Tehran for talks on building an independent under-sea gas pipeline.

"New Delhi has a plan to build an under- sea gas pipeline between Iran and India, in order not to pay any transition fee for delivery of gas," the official added.

If an udner-sea gas pipeline between Oman and India is built, Iran can build a similar pipeline in deep waters to join the afore-said pipeline for export of gas to New Delhi, Bidarmaghz continued.

There have been some agreements between Iran and Oman on making the project operational in cooperation with a third country, he stated.

Based on a trilateral agreement between Iran, Oman and a third country, Tehran provides natural gas to an Omani liquefied natural gas (LNG) factory in order to convert it into LNG and sell it to the third country.

Since the discovery of natural gas reserves in Iran's South Pars field in 1988, the Iranian government has stepped up its efforts to incrase its gas exports abroad.
